Area spared major storm damage, but more rain headed this way

Athens-Clarke public utilities workers stayed busy Monday repairing sewer lines that overflowed after a storm dumped nearly 2.5 inches of rain on Athens.

Crews were trying to locate cracks or broken joints along two sections of sewer line - one near Ben Burton Park, the other near Carriage Lane off Barnett Shoals Drive, said Glenn Coleman, assistant director of the Athens-Clarke Public Utilities Department.

"We're still working to determine exactly what happened," Coleman said Monday. "We were having a lot of rainfall in a short period of time, and we think some of that water is being channeled into the sewer."

Gusts of wind up to 30 mph knocked limbs from trees across the Athens area as the storm barreled through Sunday evening.

More than 16,000 people in parts of Clarke, Jackson, Barrow and Oconee counties lost electric service when a tree limb fell on a power line near the intersection of Kathwood Drive and Newton Bridge Road, according to spokesmen for three local electrical companies.

Crews quickly removed the limb and restored electricity to most customers shortly after the storm hit about 7 p.m., said Greg Brooks, communications director for Walton Electric Membership Corp.

"They didn't have to make any individual repairs. When they fixed that, the whole system was cleared up," Brooks said.
